Day 2: Temptations

Last Saturday, David and I swung by Barnes and Noble for the book which inspired us to begin our 21-day cleanse.  As we approached the store, I noticed a table surrounded by Girl Scouts.  They were promoting their annual cookie fundraiser.  I remember mentioning to David that I thought I had bought some cookies from one of my students this year, but no one had hit me up for money yet.  So, I assumed that I must have confused the purchase from previous years.

Today. Voila, 4 boxes of girl scout cookies.  My student's family gave them to me free of charge.  How could I refuse such a generous gift?  To top it off, the mother made a homemade quiche for me to take home. She didn't pre-cook it, so now I'm sitting here smelling the buttery, flaky crust as the egg and cheese mixture bubbles to perfection.  I'm doing this so that I can put it in the freezer for post-cleanse.  Did you know that the sense of smell helps us decide what to eat and how much of it to eat?  My oven contains edible heaven, and I could eat every last morsel with no remorse.  Stay strong!

Now, I need to hide these cookies.  Samoas, Tagalongs, Thin Mints and Berry Munch.  I can just imagine the gooey, blissful taste of caramel, coconut and chocolate that make the Samoas my favorite.  I look at the ingredients, and the first one is sugar.  The Berry Munch sounds like a "healthier" option.  The ingredients include gluten and dairy, and the word "sugar" is listed 4 times.  The Berry Munch cookies do have dried cranberries even though they are sweetened as well. Long sigh.....  I'm putting them far back in the closet right now!!

Today's menu:

Breakfast:  I had 2 slices of sprouted grain toast with vegan butter and a tangelo.  David had oatmeal.

Lunch:  This was the best meal of the day.  Havana black beans served over brown rice.  The ingredients include coconut milk, peppers, onions and spices.  I don't know that I've ever taken time to cook a meal like this in the middle of the day.  It was certainly worth it. Thumbs up.

Snack:  Almonds and naturally decaffeinated chai tea

Dinner:  Every-man-for-himself due to work schedules.  David had left overs.  I decided on a bowl of Kamut flakes with blueberries and almond milk.  I don't like to eat too heavy when it's late.

I put a reminder on our fridge about the food we are to abstain from during this cleanse.  I left a place for us to express ourselves in regards to the new lifestyle.  David decided to express himself with our 1-year-old's fridge magnets instead.

Even though David "expressed" himself with the magnets, he has enjoyed the vegan dishes so far.
